So how does your garden grow? Ask most people and they’ll say ’continuously’ - it seems that no sooner have you done one thing than something else needs attention. Keeping it all under control and in order is a year-round job that can very quickly get on top of you if you’re not careful. But with a little planning and a bit of time each week, you can keep your garden looking its best whatever the season. It doesn’t all have to be hard work - there’s a lot you can do to save yourself money and have fun in the process.

Here are our favourite Autumn Top Tips for easier gardening:

  • Seeds shouldn’t be planted until spring, so if you have any store them in a cool, dry place. If they’re loose, sort them into envelopes and don’t forget to label them clearly.
  • A simple fine net covering over ornamental ponds and pools will stop leaves blowing into the water and choking them during Autumn months.
  • Set your the blades on your lawnmower blades to ‘high’ and simply mow-up the leaves - it’s a lot quicker and easier than raking them up.
  • If you’ve got any Dahlias, be sure to lift them before the first heavy frost sets in. Dry them off and check the roots for damage or insects before storing in a dry place for the winter.
  • Remove any old bedding plants for the winter and add to your compost heap. Rake up debris and weeds then fork over roughly to allow the frost to kill any pests.
  • Remove old leaves and weeds from borders - a haven for slugs and snails. If a small enough area, cover with coarse grit to help drainage.
  • Prune climbing roses by cutting back as close to the ground as possible. Train new growth at an angle to encourage a fuller look.
  • Check any tree ties and pads to make sure they’re not cutting into new growth on the tree. If the tree is strong enough, remove supports and fill the hole where the stake was with rich compost.
  • Always turn garden debris over before burning - it’s a favourite hibernation spot for hedgehogs. Leave a few small heaps of leaves under hedges for them instead.
