’Everything in its place and a place for everything’ may be an old adage, but nowhere is it more valid than in the bedroom. If you’re not careful, you can very quickly find yourself overrun with clothes spilling out of cupboards, shoes all over the floor and bits and pieces everywhere. Before you know it, your beautiful bedroom can turn from an oasis of calm into a living nightmare.

Create a Calming Clutter-free Space

No matter how much storage space you have, it’s never in the right place and you can guarantee you’ll need more in the future. Not everyone can afford the luxury of custom-built storage, but luckily these days, there are lots of clever ideas to help you make the most of every available space.

A Few Handy Hints

  • Look for furniture that has a dual purpose such as combining storage capacity with a table or seat.
  • Think about the shape and size of the things you need to store and how often you need to get to them.
  • Use the corners and alcoves of your room, they provide natural areas for cupboards and shelves.
  • Use the space under the bed to store bulky or heavy items. Wheeled boxes and bags protect items from dust and make access easy.
  • If you’re considering buying a bed with built-in drawers, make sure you’ve got enough available space around the bed to open them.
  • Make the most of unused storage such as suitcases when they’re not in use. These are ideal for keeping clothes in out of season.
  • Get organised. Arrange your wardrobe space to suit your clothes - do you need more full-length hanging space or shallower shelves?
  • Drawer organisers and shoe bags can help keep things together and make them easier to find
  • If you can, declutter. It’s the simplest and most cost effective solution of all, but for most of us, the hardest to do.
