Thread Count & Fabric Guide
’Thread count’ is a term used to describe the weave of the material and relates to the number of threads per sq. inch, usually between 128 - 310. Put simply, the higher the count, the softer and stronger the material.
Defining the Quality of Fabrics
Different types and weaves of cotton offer different benefits - here are the main ones to look out for:
Cotton Percale: This is made from high-quality combed cotton and has a thread count of at least 180, giving it a smooth and crisp feel.
Cotton Sateen: Made from extremely fine-combed cotton with a thread count of between 300 and 600 for a luxuriously smooth finish and subtle sheen. Slightly less hard wearing than percale.
Cotton Jacquard: Made from a similar thread to sateen but woven in a special way to create a matt/sateen self-pattern (usually stripes, check or floral). A thread count of between 300 and 600 ensures it’s smooth and soft to the touch.
