Origins of the Business
Sanderson is renowned for producing exciting designs which are both contemporary and traditional with care and attention to detail. Inspired by past techniques, they use bold colours and prints to bring wall paper and fabric to life.
Founded by Arthur Sanderson in 1860, the company started out distributing English, American, French and Japanese wall coverings and soon became the UK's leading supplier.
By 1865 the company was already booming and Sanderson had moved to larger premises. Yet again the company boomed as they made a household name for themselves and due to increasing demand, Sanderson set up his own factory in Chiswick in1879, printing wallpaper by hand.
Not long after acquiring the new premises the company bought their first machine due to the increase in demand and the changes in styles that the public were demanding. Arthur died three years later leaving the factory in the hands of his sons. In the year 1899 the company joined the prestigious Wallpaper Manufacturers Ltd.
Sanderson in the 20th Century & Beyond
Many of the designs are based on the principles of William Morris’s work which the company were commissioned to print in the 1930’s. When William Morris went out of business in the 1940’s Sanderson bought their printing blocks and continued to print their designs on wallpaper. The use of bold patterns and intricate detailing is very reminiscent of Morris’s style.
The company is still a leading manufacturer in wall paper, fabric and bed linen but has branched out to include paints and Ceramic Table wear. Sanderson is also the holder of a Royal Warrant as suppliers of wallpapers, paints and fabrics to H.M. Queen Elizabeth II.
